Wood veneer sheets in different species fanned out beside stacked plywood panels

Wood floor enthusiasts often choose veneer flooring because it lets them showcase a particular wood species without the cost of solid wood flooring.

But producers and consumers both need to know that veneered flooring can trap moisture problems if moisture content (MC) isn’t managed.

Шпон: процесс производства

Veneer flooring manufacturing still requires careful moisture management to succeed. Manufacturers use wood moisture meters throughout production to make sure the wood’s MC is even and in balance with the relative humidity (RH) of its environment. That balance point is the wood’s equilibrium moisture content (EMC), and reaching it helps a veneer floor stay flat and last.

Every piece of wood, no matter how it’s used or manufactured, needs to reach EMC to perform as expected.

Now apply that to flooring manufacturing. The veneer layer has its own MC, and so does every other layer of wood in the board. If producers use layers of different species, managing MC is even more important, because each layer, even after it reaches EMC, responds differently to изменения в ОР. Add the moisture and chemicals in industrial wood glues, and it’s clear why producing high-quality veneer flooring is a challenge.

Even Hot-Pressed Flooring Still Holds Moisture

Producers typically cross-layer several thin layers of wood over the core, with glue between them, and then hot-press everything into one floorboard. Cross-layering means the grain of each layer runs perpendicular to the next, which limits how much each layer can move when moisture conditions change.

Why use a wood moisture meter at this stage? Because every layer pressed into that floorboard is still wood, and it still absorbs and releases moisture as RH changes, even after it has reached EMC. The adhesives between the layers also add their own moisture and chemicals that interact with the wood. And of course, the floor’s MC will change with spills and with the seasons.

Well-made, properly installed veneer wood floors don’t have to be a constant worry, as long as manufacturers, installers, and owners understand how wood and moisture interact. Checking MC with a wood moisture meter helps.

Два ключа к головоломке

Flooring owners benefit from knowing not only the species of the top veneer but also the material underneath it. Wood species vary in density, and a board made from several species with very different densities can move unevenly as moisture changes. So the first key to understanding how a veneer floor will behave is to know the species used in the core, the layers, and the veneer.

The second key is a good wood moisture meter for checking MC in veneer flooring. Wagner Meters makes безштифтовые измерители влажности древесины that measure MC quickly and easily, without damaging the flooring.

A good wood moisture meter helps make sure veneered wood flooring performs as beautifully as it looks.
