Joinery is how separate pieces of wood are connected, and it’s at the heart of fine woodworking. Strong, well-made joints matter for both the look and the structure of every woodworking project.

All wood contains some moisture, even after kiln drying. When its moisture content (MC) is outside the acceptable range, the swelling and shrinkage that follow can weaken a joint. Even a small joint depends on a precise fit, so a wood moisture meter is a smart, cost-saving tool for managing moisture in your projects.

Boards with routed mortises and a loose tenon

Mortise and tenon joint parts

The joint is usually strengthened with

Стыковое соединение со скошенным краем: similar to a butt joint, but both pieces are cut at an angle (usually 45 degrees). It’s often used for square corners, like picture frames, because it hides the end grain of both pieces.

Соединение шип-паз: each piece has a groove cut along one edge and a thin ridge (the tongue) along the opposite edge. If the tongue is a separate strip that fits into grooves in both pieces, it’s called a шлицевое соединение.

Соединение шип-паз: a projecting stub (the tenon) fits tightly into a hole cut for it (the mortise), and the joint is then held together with glue, a pin, or a wedge.

Hands fitting together an interlocking wooden corner jointСегодня большинство столяров используют клей to secure the tenon inside the mortise, but in years past, woodworkers often made tenons that went all the way through the mortised piece and secured them with a wedge or dowel.

Коробка шарнирная (sometimes also called a finger joint): interlocking square “fingers” cut into the ends of two boards, used for the corners of boxes.

Finger joint or comb joint (end-to-end): interlocking fingers used to join short lengths of wood end to end into longer pieces, which conserves timber.

Dado joint: a slot cut across the grain of one piece so another piece can fit into it, such as shelves set into slots in the sides of a bookcase.

Groove joint: like a dado joint, except the slot is cut with the grain.

Wood is an anisotropic material, which means it doesn’t behave the same way in all directions. For example, wood is very strong along the grain but much weaker across it. Many joinery techniques depend on or compensate for this, and joints that don’t account for it are likely to fail.

Wood’s anisotropy also shows up in how it moves with changes in its MC: it shrinks and swells much more across the grain than along it. All wood gains or loses moisture as it moves toward balance with the relative humidity (RH) and temperature of the surrounding air, its (EMC). When RH falls, wood shrinks, and when RH rises, it swells.

Indoors, heating and air conditioning can cause big changes in the wood’s MC, so woodworking joints need to allow for the resulting movement.

Wood is stronger when stressed along the grain (longitudinally) than it is when stressed across the grain (radially and tangentially). Changes in MC can affect any wood joint, especially when water-based glues add moisture. Some joinery methods rely on a little swelling to make a tight joint, but too much moisture causes damaging dimensional changes. If the two wood pieces being joined have significantly different MC levels, then the final joint may be flawed.

Wood’s MC changes whenever the RH around it changes, and it always will. The key is managing the wood’s MC to prevent joint failures from its natural expansion and contraction.

A wood moisture meter lets you check the wood’s MC at every stage of a project, which goes a long way toward joints that don’t fail. Pinless wood moisture meters measure MC quickly and easily, typically to a depth of up to ¾ inch.

Сегодня измерители влажности древесины show the MC on a digital display, so you can see whether it’s within your project’s specifications. Ideally, measure each piece before you join them, so you can deal with wood that’s too wet or too dry before it causes damage.

A wood moisture meter helps you build strong, durable joints.

    Ian
