Оптимизация производительности печи с помощью поточного измерения влажности
In building an effective kiln-drying program, a thorough analysis of your lumber’s moisture content should be the top concern.
That’s obvious, you’re probably thinking. What’s less obvious is how many points in the manufacturing process there are where moisture content can and should be monitored to optimize kiln performance.
Measuring moisture at several points in the process matters, but measuring all of your lumber after it leaves the kiln, before further processing, gives you the best insight into how efficiently and effectively your kilns are drying.
Post-kiln moisture measurement also lets you catch pieces that don’t meet your moisture requirements before they’re processed further down the line.
Системы измерения влажности в печи: измерение в реальном времени, а не анализ данных
In-kiln moisture measurement systems are real-time measurement tools. Their readings help the kiln operator or kiln control system run the drying schedule. These systems use a limited number of sensors, so they measure only a small fraction of the kiln load.
Along with measuring равновесное содержание влаги during drying, they can help determine when a kiln charge is ready to pull and support real-time adjustments during the drying process.
They aren’t comprehensive moisture data collection or quality control tools, though. The main job of an in-kiln system is to help operators determine when a charge has reached its target moisture content range, not to perform a full сушка в печи или анализ качества влаги.
Системы измерения влажности в потоке in the processing plant or planer mill, on the other hand, can measure all of the dried lumber early in the process, which puts them in an ideal position to collect moisture data about the upstream drying process.
Data from these systems can provide comprehensive moisture data by charge or by product run to help fine-tune the kiln drying process.

With an in-line moisture measurement system, every board in the production chain contributes to your moisture quality evaluation.
With a sample that includes all of the lumber from all of your kilns, you should be able to track at least two major indicators of kiln performance: the standard deviation (the spread of moisture content within each charge) and the percentage of lumber that comes out too wet or too dry.
1. Стандартное отклонение
Standard deviation shows, both visually and numerically, how much a kiln’s results vary from charge to charge. Picture the traditional bell curve: the narrower the spread of post-kiln moisture content around the target, the better the kiln performance and the better the grade recovery for each kiln and charge.
There will always be some lumber that falls outside the target range, but a well-optimized kiln setup should significantly reduce the board feet that miss the target moisture content.
Standard deviation becomes more meaningful when you can look at a history of data, both kiln by kiln and charge by charge. If one kiln regularly shows a higher standard deviation than the others, that may point to a maintenance issue, or possibly an operator issue that can be addressed with more training.
Tracking the standard deviation for different species, or even for specific suppliers of green lumber, can help you optimize the initial kiln setup for each charge. Simply put, the standard deviation can point you in the right direction when you’re asking why the data looks the way it does.
Tracking standard deviation is a good way to spot drying changes that may improve kiln performance. A mechanical change (e.g., reversing airflow more often) or a procedural change (e.g., adjusting the venting schedule) may be all it takes to improve the standard deviation for a particular kiln and prevent overdried or wet lumber.
If you have a very specific moisture content target, other practices, like stacking procedures or different schedules for different species, may also become important. Overall, though, the lower the standard deviation, the better the process.
Standard deviation does have limitations as a traditional quality control measure.
A 2007 Wagner Meters study found that standard deviation and average deviation were unreliable for setting optimum kiln drying targets for softwood grading. Put briefly, two charges with a similar average moisture content (MC) don’t always produce the same lumber value.
That finding led Wagner Meters to an approach it calls “lognormal statistical analysis.” While it hasn’t been extensively tested for hardwood applications, it may be worth examining for data that falls outside the expected norm.
2. Wet and Overdried Lumber
Lumber that finishes above the maximum допустимое содержание влаги is a problem. The kiln time and cost of redrying and remilling have to be weighed against the losses from degrade, resorting, mold, and wet claims.
The obvious response when this number is consistently high is to dry longer. But overdrying is just as much of a problem for producing the target product.
This link between moisture content and grade recovery is one of the strongest reasons to use an in-line moisture measurement system.
With a larger sample size, and with the right assessment and reporting tools integrated with an in-line system, kiln performance can be analyzed and corrected to find the “sweet spot,” the drying conditions that give you the best kiln performance.
Разработка данных
Many mills and secondary wood products processors already run in-line moisture measurement systems. Integrating the right components is important, but the real key to success is making the best use of the data for real-world insight into kiln drying performance.
Optimization means making sure information keeps moving, and this is where your kiln operators or data collection specialists become crucial.
Here are some questions to ask to turn data collection into practical insights:
1. Are we making full use of our moisture measurement?
Is your in-line moisture measurement system running continuously to collect as much data as possible? Is it set up to record the data automatically? Meaningful monitoring depends on the volume of data collected and on collecting it consistently at the same point in the process.
The more data you have to assess, the more insight you’ll have into your kiln drying operations.
2. Кто отвечает за сбор и оценку данных?
In some mills, moisture content is monitored by graders; in others, by quality control (QC) staff or kiln operators. Once the data is collected, you also need to be able to sort it by relevant categories, such as kiln, dimension, species, or date of the kiln load.
Many assessment and reporting tools offer a wide range of reporting options, but in the end, the reports need to be used to drive and optimize the kiln drying process.
3. Как реализуются изменения?
As in any large production operation, findings need to be communicated clearly to produce effective change. Ideally, several people will be trained to run your in-line moisture measurement system, so assessment, parameter setup, and kiln setup changes can be made promptly and accurately in response to the data reports.
Использование данных
The goal of storing and analyzing kiln data isn’t just to shorten charge times or catch kiln maintenance issues. It’s to make sure each step of the drying process delivers the best lumber grade percentages possible.
For mills that don’t redry wet lumber, finding the optimal set point for the kiln process can mean even greater savings in lumber grade value.
In-line moisture measurement systems also offer other practical features for mill operations. For example, the Wagner Meters Omega In-Line Moisture Measurement System takes moisture readings on every piece of lumber, and pieces that are out of spec (too wet or too dry) can trigger spray-marking devices or a dropout gate.
That lumber can then be easily identified and sent back for redrying or remilling as needed.
With a history of data for a particular kiln, you can also map moisture content patterns to help identify kilns with potential maintenance or performance issues.
There are no hard and fast rules that guarantee every charge will respond the same way to the same conditions, but with good data records, you can spot trends and target specific issues or variables more quickly.
For mills that routinely run charges with mixed species or mixed dimensions, in-line data gives an accurate picture of kiln performance that can inform the kiln schedule or process for each charge.
Оптимизация на фабрике
Drying lumber is as much an art as it is an exercise in data tracking. Because moisture data can be applied in so many ways, the right assessment and reporting tools are a must for any company looking to optimize kiln performance and improve product quality.
